Effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the mechanism of ethylene inhibition in regard of ethylene binding to its receptor was investigated. The binding ability of ethylene decreased with the increasing concentration of 1-MCP, indicating that 1-MCP inhibits the binding of ethylene, and the higher the concentration of 1-MCP, the higher was the binding probability for ethylene receptor. The interaction of ethylene and 1-MCP in the ethylene binding site was assessed by Lineweaver-Burk plot. The data suggest that the inhibition by 1-MCP is competitive against ethylene in the same ethylene binding site. On the other hand, it was found that the abilities of ethylene action inhibition were different according to the molecular structures of cyclopropene compounds. Among them, 1-MCP and cyclopropene at extremely low concentration (0.5 nL¡¤L^(-1)) inhibited ethylene action for 14 days. It was suggested that the inhibition by 1-MCP seems to be irreversible or at least remains bound for a very long time to ethylene receptor.
